The 125th birth anniversary of late Kumarathunga Munidasa was commemorated yesterday (25) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The ceremony was chaired by Kumarathunga Munidasa Foundation founder Ven. Ahangama Mahinda Thera. Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara delivered the keynote address under the title of "Importance of Kumarathunga's Thinking". Several books written by late Kumaratunga Munidass which were re-printed were published at the ceremony.
Kumarathunga Munidasa Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to the student who obtained the best results in Sinhala Language and Sinhala Literature at GCE O/L was won by Ayodya Rathnayake, a student of Newstead Balika Mahavidyalaya, Negombo.
A cash prize of Rs. 100.000 under the sponsorship of National Savings Bank was awarded to the the student at the ceremony.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena also addressed the gathering. Veteran vocalists Edward Jayakody and Elbert Fernando contributed with several songs. Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena was also present.
Kumaratunga Munidasa, born on 25 July 1887 in Idigasaara, Dickwella in the Matara Districtwas was a pioneer Sri Lankan (Sinhala) linguist, grammarian, commentator, writer, poet, and journalist. Munidasa spoke of Language, Nation, Country as a Triple Gem.He used many languages as Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit, Tamil, Malayalam, Greek, Latin and English.
