Rs. 53 Billion spent for Eastern Development

The government has so far spent Rs. 53 Billion for the development of the Eastern Province and has planned to implement several other projects to improve the living standards of the farming, and fishing communities in the province.

 
This was stated by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development addressing a media briefing held that Mahaweli Centre in Colombo.  The Minister said that no previous government has allocated such a large amount of money for the development of the Eastern Province.


He mentioned there will be no room for separatism in the country hereafter and added that the TNA’s attempt to woo the SLMC has ended in a failure and the SLMC would not throw its weight behind the TNA in this election.  


Parliamentarian Prabha Ganeshan said that Tamil voters should vote for Tamil candidates contesting Digamadulla, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts on the UPFA ticket to ensure adequate representation for the community, and emphasized the pivotal importance of strengthening the Tamil voice within the UPFA group at the Eastern Provincial Council.  


Mr. Ganeshan vehemently criticized those who still pursue the failed elusive Eelam project in spite of its elimination in May 2009. He accused that a section of Tamil politicians of promoting separatism at the expense of post-war national reconciliation. He also accused a section of the media of giving space to those working against national unity. (niz)
