Prices of essential items reduced

With effect from today, Lanka Sathosa has reduced prices of eight essential items under the directives of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Accordingly, Price of a kilogram of Dhal has been reduced from Rs. 140 to Rs.119 and a kilogram of white sugar has been reduced from Rs.110 to Rs.96/ 50.
The government has decided to keep price level of Samba and Sudu Kekulu varieties at Rs.55 and Rs.45 respectively. However, the price of a kilogram of Nadu variety has been slashed to Rs.55 and Rathu Nadu to Rs.45.
The prices of lentils, canned fish and sprats have also been reduced.
Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando said the price reduction was introduced after having analyzed the tender prices and the market prices of essential commodities in order to give maximum relief to the consumers and also to have a control on prices since black marketeers were increasing the prices at their own will creating artificial shortages.
He said that an investigation unit is in operation to monitor the price levels at Lanka Sathosa outlets. (niz)
