The Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Chanaka Kurukulasuriya said that a streamlined programme is in operation for the development of main towns in the country. Under this programme several main towns including Colombo, Kandy, Matara and Galle are being developed.
Priority under this programme had been given for the development of Sri Lanka’s Commercial capital Colombo. The development of the Galle road from Kollupitiya to Bambalapitiya has now being completed. A large area of this block will be developed as a green zone.
The Chairman said that the Government has decided to establish these Green Zones for the benefit of the people living in flats, and another Green Zone will be established in the Bank of Ceylon area in Colombo Fort. Mr. Kurukulasuriya said that this Zone will be established in a low lying area and hence no one will be inconvenienced by that.
He said the flood control programme implemented for the Colombo City is now nearing completion. The Beire Lake and other lakes will also be developed. Short term, medium term and long term programmes are being launched for these activities. The UDA Chairman said that due to the extensive assistance being provided for the tri forces for these development activities it has been possible to minimize the expenditure.(niz)
