Mega thetrical production 'Mahasamayama' rehearsals in progress

Rehearsals of the 'Mahasamayama" drama are now being carried out at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Arts Theatre and music has been completed under the direction of Samantha Perera.
‘Mahasamayama’ is a large scale theatrical production based on an ancient traditional legend - 'Gotaimbara and Mahasona'. which will be staged at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre to mark its first anniversary. The drama directed and produced by Prof.Ariyarathne Athugala is his first ever mega production and the script too has been written by him.
The drama is woven around ancient Sri Lankan and Indian mythology and folklore, viewing it from a modern perspective, creating a fusion of Indian and Sri Lankan music, drama and literature. This will in particular lay emphasis on the diverse music and co traditions prevailing in Sri Lanka over centuries, embracing all ethnic communities.
The drama designed to fit into this ultra modern theatre will be a massive production and will certainly be the first if its kind in Sri Lanka. Prominent exponents of drama and dance numbering hundreds will participate in this production. A special feature of the theatrical play ‘Mahasamayama’will be the use of 40 hand carved & hand painted & colorful traditional masks.
The cast feauring key figures in the Sri Lankan theatre play will include Jayalath Manorathne, Jackson Anthony, Sriyantha Mendis, Wijaya Nandasiri, Nissanka Diddeniya, Indika Upamali, Sahan Ranwala, Chathurika Peiris, Senanayake Weraliyadda and Madani Malwatte together with the cultural troupes of the Tri-services – the Army, the Navy and the Airforce.

This drama has been planned not only to infuse vibrancy and vitality to Sri Lankan drama but also as a launching pad for up and coming artistes.
The performance will take place at the Nelum Pokuna – Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre on 15th December 2012.
