Soldiers of the Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) on a three day shramadana campaign renovated the buildings of J / Vasavilan primary school at Urumpirai. The renovation was conducted by the troops of the 511 Brigade at Atchelu in compliance to a request of the principal of the school K. Kanagaram from Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe. Classrooms are presently being held in four temporary shelters constructed in a private-owned land at Urumpirai until it is shifted to the J / Vasavilan Central College premises.
In his request Principal Kanagaram highlighted the possibility for children to get injured due to rusty tin sheets protruded from their original fixings. He further intimated the necessity of repairing them before the third school term commences on the 3rd September. According to the request, SF-J Commander instructed the Commander 511 Brigade Colonel Wijendra Goonathilake to study the situation and to do the needful for the benefit of 460 small children attending the school.
Nearly 300 male and female soldiers serving under the 511 Brigade volunteered to contribute their labour for this humanitarian act and worked for three days to complete the renovation on 25th August. Financial provisions to purchase necessary items were given by the government.
All buildings, principal’s office, staff room and children’s park were renovated and the school premise was cleaned by the troops. A few parents joined the soldiers in the Shramadana.
