Irrigation development in the East

After liberation of the Eastern Province from the clutches and atrocities of terrorism, the government launched a massive programme to revive infrastructure facilities in the Province, through the Neganahira Navodaya programme.

Rehabilitation of roads, electricity and water supply schemes, up-liftment of education, Health, sanitation and cultural facilities, development of agriculture and fishing industries, animal husbandry and rural industries have taken pride of place under this development programme.

Due to the fact that the East was the rice basin in the past the government focused major attention on development of irrigation facilities.  The mega irrigation projects implemented included the Rambukkan Oya Project, Heda Oya Dev Proj, the Yan Oya project and the Moragahakanda and Kaluganga Development Project.(niz)
