At the United National Party convention held on Saturday the Parliamentarian Wijayadasa Rajapakse submitted a proposal that the term of office of the Party Leader should be extended to 6 years under clause 8.1 of the party constitution.  This proposal was seconded by the Parliamentarian Lawyer Ajith P Perera.

Subsequently the Party Leader requested for the members attending the 54th Party Convention to vote on the proposal.

At this moment Parliamentarian and the Deputy Leader of the UNP Sajith Premadasa said that he is opposing the proposal as it is not agreeable to his consciousness.  With this statement there was a commotion in the convention Hall but the Party Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe said that the proposal has been approved by the majority of the representatives and declared that the proposal is adopted.

Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera submitted the Party declaration for radical change after that.  It was seconded by the Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha De Silva.  Voting on this also was conducted by the Party Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe and it was also adopted by majority (niz)
