President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to provide justice to the Golden Key depositors. About 9,000 depositors who invested millions of rupees in the Golden Key became destitute overnight due to the sudden closure of the institution.
Many of these depositors have invested their life time savings, some by selling the properties they inherited and some others their provident fund savings. They complain that although they were to get some relief when their petition filed in the Supreme Court was being heard by a panel of judges headed by the Supreme Court Judge Mrs. Shirani Gunatilleke, the former Chief Justice Mrs. Shirani Bandaranaike by taking over to hear the case by a panel of judges under her, denied them the justice they anticipated.
During the impeachment motion was being debated in the Parliament, these depositors were on a death fast in front of the official residence of the Chief Justice and they abandoned the fast when the former Chief Justice was impeached.
The depositors met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees and it was at this meeting that the President gave instructions to provide them justice immediately.
The Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabral, the UPFA Colombo District Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala, and the Chief of the Presidential Staff Gamini Senarath also attended this meeting. (niz)
