The Sri Lanka Independent Lawyers Association vehemently condemns the attempts being made by the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to achieve petty political objectives with the ending of the impeachment process. They point out that it is in a totally different manner he behaved when the impeachment motion was presented and the process was in motion. The Association says that after the complete process was over Wickremasinghe now requests the legal fraternity to help him to topple the government.
The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Independent Lawyers Association Champani Padmasekara said that their Association vehemently condemns this move by Wickremasinghe. He said that their association will take every measure to prevent such a situation.
Addressing a media conference in Colombo on Thursday (16) Padmasekera said that if someone attempts to make chaos in the country and thereby create and anarchic situation, all patriotic forces should get together under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to defeat such moves.
The President of the Association Attorney At Law D.P Mendis said that the impeachment process was carried out in accordance with the constitutional provisions. He said article 107 of the constitution clearly stipulates on the appointment and removal of the chief justice and the Judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Accordingly the preliminary objections against the Chief Justice were proved. Responding to a question raised by media personnel Mendis said that the Supreme Court interpretation was an incorrect one. Regarding the petition filed at the bribery or corruption commission against the new chief justice, Mendis said that any person in the country can submit such petitions. He said by merely submitting a petition does not mean that he is guilty of that charge.
Meanwhile addressing another media conference held in Colombo yesterday, the Sri Lanka Independent Young Lawyers Association pointed out that attempts made by certain groups to create chaos in the country with the appointment of the new Chief Justice have been foiled. The Secretary of the Association Attorney at Law Manoj Gamage said that there is no truth in the propaganda being made by certain people that the judiciary has become chaotic. (niz)
