Thai Pongal celebrations at Temple Trees

A ceremony on the occasion of the Thai Pongal Festival was held at Temple Trees yesterday (16) under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa were garlanded and received in traditional manner at the Thai Pongal ceremony.
Tamils all over the world celebrate Thai Pongal which is a Hindu religious festival. This festival is traditionally dedicated to the offering of thanks to the Sun God - Surya, for all the blessings received for a successful harvest.
The celebration area at Temple Trees was decorated with flowers and other traditional decorations. The function was made colourful and melodious with the cultural perofrmances. A Ko Matha Pooja was also held as a part of the celebration.
Indian High Commissioner Ashok K.Kantha was a special guest at the function. Present at the function were Ministers Douglas Devananda, Gamini Lokuge, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Deputy Ministers Geethanjana Gunawardena, M.K.D.S.Gunaratna, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.
