Sri Lanka has the capability to successfully face if a proposal
against the country is presented at the UN Human Rights Council
sessions in Geneva. Sri Lanka is a country that has defeated the
world's most ruthless terrorist organization and that has overcome
several major challenges.
These comments have been made by the Chief of the Singaporean
International Research Institute on Political Violence and Terrorism,
Professor Rohan Gunarathne in a special statement to the Sri Lanka
Broadcasting Corporation.
He has said that Sri Lanka should act friendly with the western
nations and initiate efforts to make them understand the reality of
the situation in Sri Lanka. The country has rehabilitated 11,500
former LTTE cadres surrendered to the security forces and integrated
them to the society. It is Sri Lanka that has resettled nearly 300,000
persons who became displaced within a very short period which many
countries despite being powerful and resourceful have been unable to
do for several years. The government of Sri Lanka has also
reconstructed several thousand houses that were destroyed by the
terrorists.
Professor Gunarathne has stated that what the Global Tamil Forum is
doing at present is raising funds and influencing the western
parliamentarians through the promise of Tamil votes in the western
countries. They are also making the Tamil National Alliance MPs to
address their meetings with this objective.
Commenting about the UN Human Rights Council, Professor Gunaratne has
said that several hundred thousand people lost their lives by military
operations carried out by America and Britain in Iraq and Afghanistan.
However, this factor is not being discussed at the UN Human Rights
Council. Therefore this council has now become merely a political
organization. Professor Gunarathne has emphasized that although Sri
Lanka maintain economic relations with China it should focus attention
on establishing close relationship with other countries as well. (niz)
