The birth centenary of Prof.Ediriweera Sarachchandra will be commemorated with full state patronage. A meeting was held at Tempre Trees on Monday (22) with the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the birth centenary programme of the renowned Sri Lankan Playwright, novelist, poet, literary critic, essayist and social commentator late Ediriweera Sarachchandra hich falls on 3rd June 2014.
At the discussion held with the members of the Sarachchandra Foundation arrangements were finalized to launch many cultural programmes at national and international level during the year beginning from 3rd June 2013.
These include the production of 10 plays written by Sarachchandra that have not been produced, the launch of a book on the Birth Centenary of Sarachchandra and nurturing of the Sarachchandra commemorative Museum being built at the Peradeniya University. In addition to organizing drama festivals in Universities, school seminars on the field of arts also will be held.
Arrangements also will be made to perform stage plays at leading opera houses in London, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing and New Delhi.
President Rajapaksa at the discussion instructed to appoint a Committee headed by the Minister of Cultural Affairs to coordinate these activities.
The President also launched the website which gives details of Sarachchandra s creative productions and information on his life.
Ministers T.B.Ekanayake and Bandula Gunawrdena, Secretary to the President lalith Weeratunga, Mrs.Lalitha Sarachchandra Chairman of Sarachchandra Foundation Prof. Carlo Fonseka, Prof. J.B. Dissanayake, U.N. O. Dharmadasa, UNESCO's Sri Lanka National Commission Secretary General Preethi Viraj Perera, Secretary to the Media Ministry Charitha Herath and Director General of Government Information Prof. Ariyarathne Athugala were among those present at this discussion.
