About 80 projects in Sri Lanka have been detailed to be promoted among the CHOGM participants and the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) envisages the generation of investment business worth around 2 billion US dollars in Sri Lanka.
This was disclosed by the UPFA National List MP A. H. M. Azwer presenting an Adjournment motion in Parliament on the holding of the CHOGM Summit in Sri Lanka in November.
He said that the Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 countries that supports each other and works together towards shared goals in democracy and development. The Commonwealth is a home to two billion citizens of all faiths and ethnicities and includes some of the world's largest, smallest, riches and poorest countries. Over half of its citizens are 25 or under. This is the most significant factor to note.
Azwer said that when we hold this Conference here, these Heads of Nations will represent two billion citizens of the world, and it will become a very opportune moment for Sri Lanka to showcase the post-conflict development in Sri Lanka and the opportunities available for economic co-operation.
Speaking further Azwer said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be entitled to be the Chairman of the Commonwealth for the next two years, and it will grant him an unparallel opportunity to be a leader on the world stage. He will be the leader of the 54 Commonwealth nations for the next two years, and he asked the opposition members to be jealous in this regard if they like.
He said that the Heads of Government will participate in conferences and visit various parts of the country. The main meetings will be held in Colombo, Kandy and Hambantota – the new “land” of Sri Lanka. Our economic revival will be showcased to the world through Hambantota, he said.
Hailing the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa Azwer also recalled a statement made by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon when they had a meeting with him outside the UN General Assembly. Ban Ki Moon told the President, “You are a great leader that we find in Asia. I would ask you to take the leadership of Asia”. (niz)
