Hon. Douglas Devananda, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development on his official tour to Batticaloa district recently, having observed the date palms on either side of Batticaloa, Kaththankudi main road grown under the direction of the Deputy Minister Hisbulla, said that he would explore the possibility of growing this palm in Jaffna Peninsula too.
Climbing a date palm on his way to Batticaloa and exploring the luxurious inflorescences with berries, said that he was of the belief that this palm could be cultivated in Jaffna Peninsula as well, on commercial scale and would take steps to obtain all information that was necessary for cultivation of the palm in Jaffna Peninsula from countries where the palm has been cultivated extensively.
On this tour, the Minister also opened up the Thalankuda industrial production village.
V. Sivagnanasothy, the Ministry Secretary; Pasupathy Sivaratnam, Chairman, Palmyrah Development Board; its General Manager, Loganathan and Kaththankudi Divisional Secretary also accompanied the Hon. Minister on this tour.
