A felicitation ceremony was held to mark the completion of 30 years of political career by Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
The felicitation ceremony was held at the Colombo Musaeus College auditorium, Saturday. President Mahinda Rajapakse who was the Chief Guest conveyed his best wishes to the minister.
Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena entered politics in 1983 and was appointed the Deputy Minister of Health and Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development. He is currently holding the portfolio of Agriculture. He was also appointed Vice President of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization.
The harvest from additional crops cultivated under the guidance of Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was symbolically presented to the President. Addressing the gathering the Minister said that he did not vote in favour of the Indo-Lanka agreement and therefore he was expelled from the party within 24 hours. He also lost the electorate represented by him. He said that there was disturbance in the country at that time and he had to face serious repercussions. The President has adequately compensated him, said the Minister. He has refrained from committing the errors normally associated with politicians.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge and Prof. J.B. Dissanayake were among those who addressed the gathering. Members of the Maha Sangha, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Ministers, Parliamentarians, artistes and intellectuals graced the occasion.
