The 8th national convention of the Sri Lanka Independent Trade Union Federation will be held at the Sri Lanka Youth Services Council auditorium in Maharagama today.
The union was found in the year 1958 during the premiership of the late Mr. S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike under the title of "Sri Lanka Nidahas Welanda ha Kaarmika Aayathana Sewaka Samithiya" celebrates its 57th year this year.
It has been successfully guiding the working masses to overcome many challenges and obstacles all these years. The union was amalgamated with 37 trade unions in 1986.
The Charter of the Union stipulates that all positions in the organization should be held by representatives of the working masses.
The welfare fund initiated by the union in the year 2006 is the largest welfare fund being maintained by a trade union in Sri Lanka.
A five storied new headquarters is now being constructed for the organization. The General Secretary of the federation Mr. Lesley Devendra said that the construction work of the building will be completed by the end of this year.(niz)
