Burundi Holds Presidential Elections Amid Political Crisis

    July 22, 2015

Bujumbura:   Burundi is holding presidential elections today amid a serious political crisis due to the nomination of president Pierre Nkurunziza to a third term of office, which opponents considered unconstitutional.

Since the announcement of that intention last April was recorded a failed coup, daily demonstrations in the streets of Bujumbura and clashes between the Army and rebels in the North.

The media and journalists were muzzled and political opponents went underground or went into exile.

After the victory of the ruling National Council Party for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) in parliamentary and regional elections (June 29), Nkurunziza's victory in the presidential seems to be a reality.

The head of state will face four candidates of formations allied to power.

Former presidents Domitien Ndayizeye and Sylvestre Ntibantunganya abandoned the electoral contest, as well as former president of the National Assembly, Jean Minani.

Amid the instability, the Government confirmed that this Tuesday was recorded as new date for presidential elections, six days after the date initially scheduled for the votes.

In that way, the Executive responded to a complaint from member countries of the East African Community (EAC) who requested a delay of elections until July 30.

For now, the authorities asked citizens to "remain calm and in peace', referring to the violence experiences in the country.
