    Dr.Abdul Kalam, former Indian President passes away Featured

    Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam passed away on Monday following sudden illness.

     

    Mr. Kalam (84) took ill at a function in Shillong and was rushed to the hospital, M. Kharkrang, SP, Khasi Hills, said.

     

    The former President collapsed during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management at around 6.30 p.m. and was taken to the hospital.

     

    Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmughanathan and Chief Secretary P.B.O. Warjri visited the Bethany hospital where Mr. Kalam has been admitted.

     

    Late Dr.Abdul Kalam, who was in Sri Lanka on a three day visit in July 2015 made the keynote address at an international conference on "An energy approach towards a Knowledge based economy” held in Colombo on 26th & 27th of July 2015.

     

    List of achievements

     

    * He was the 11th President of India (2002-2007).

    * He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 1981.

    * Joined the ISRO in 1969 and was the project director for India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle programme.

    * Was a pioneer of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, India’s space workhorse.

    * Brain behind India’s missile programme, including Agni and Prithvi.

    * He was the chief project coordinator of the Pokhran II nuclear tests.

    * He was Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the DRO between 1992 and 1999.
