Decisions taken by the Cabinet at its meeting held on 05.12.2012

Press Release on the decisions taken by the Cabinet of Ministers at its weekly meeting held on Wednesday the 5th December.

 


01.  SLPA land at Galle Port  leased out for a Ship Building facility

On a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Ports and Highways, approval was granted to lease out a portion of land at the Galle Port for the  Yacht/Leisure Craft Repair and Ship Building Facility on a 30 year lease basis to M/s Sea Gulf (Pvt) Ltd. who had forwarded an unsolicited proposal to construct a Yacht/Leisure Craft lifting facility  and the barge mounted   Yacht/Leisure craft repair facility at the Port of Galle.

 

The Cabinet of Ministers also granted approval for Sri Lanka Ports Authority to sign the Business Agreement with the Sea Gulf Shipyard (Pvt) Ltd.

 

02.       Action Plan for Procurement of Pharmaceuticals.

The proposal made by Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health, to implement an Action Plan for the Procurement of Pharmaceuticals, prepared in consultation with the Standing Cabinet Appointed Committee for Pharmaceuticals (SCAPPC), so as to eliminate the shortcomings occurring in the process of Procurement of Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the Cabinet.

 

03.       National Health Week – 2012.

The proposal made by Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health, to declare the period from 10th to 17th December 2012 as the “National Health Week – 2012”, with the participation of the health workforce consisting of more than one hundred thousand employees of different categories and with the involvement of the political authority, religious leaders, public and private sectors, social entities, so as to make the public aware of the healthcare facilities provided by the health services in the country, was approved by the Cabinet.


 

04.       Construction of a Multi Faceted Hotel Complex in Colombo,

The proposed Multi Faceted Hotel Complex will consist of 30 floors, 475 rooms and 90 service apartments, and the total investment would be around US $ 159 million.  The proposal made by Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development, to seek approval from Parliament to treat this as a Strategic Development Project in terms of the provisions of the Strategic Development Project Act, No. 14 of 2008, was approved by the Cabinet.

 

05.       Commemoration of the National Safety Day – 2012.

The objective of this event is to increase awareness of disasters among the public and the manner in which they should prepare themselves, particularly in response to disasters such as the Tsunami that took place on the 26th December 2004.  Commemorative ceremonies have been held continuously for the past 6 years in Galle, Ratnapura, Kandy, Kurunegala, Jaffna and Batticaloa Districts respectively.  The proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Disaster Management, to commemorate the National Safety Day – 2012 centered around Badulla District, in association wit the relevant Ministries and Institutions, was approved by the Cabinet.

 


06.       Construction of Seed Certification and Plant Protection Centre.

On a proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Minister of Agriculture, Cabinet approval was granted for the designing construction and monitoring of the above centres at Paranthan, Jaffna and Katunayake to be done by the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) at a cost of Rs. 88 million, Rs. 31 million and Rs. 45 million respectively.

 

07.       Construction of Provincial and District Sport Complexes – Southern Province.

Based on a proposal made by Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sports, to construct a Football and Rugby Ground at the Southern Province National Sports Complex at Sooriyawewa, Cabinet approval was granted to develop the said Sport Complex for conducting all sports activities in keeping with international standards and to provide funds to the purpose in Medium Term Budgetary Framework 2013 – 2015, so as to implement the project in stages within a period of 3 – 5 years.
