China which is assisting Sri Lanka in several development sectors is to assist the country in the development of sports as well.  A Chinese delegation will be visiting Sri Lanka later this week to explore opportunities to develop sports infrastructure in the country.

Officials of the Sports Ministry said that China’s top sports official Liu Peng will visit the country for a brief tour starting September 23.

The Ministry officials said that since China is a fast moving country in the field of sports in the world, the delegation is expected to discuss the possible ways of cooperation with the Ministry to obtain the knowledge and experience, training activities, foreign coaches and providing sports gear required at the provincial sports complexes.  The Ministry will also be looking forward for Chinese assistance for construction of a High Altitude Training Centre in Nuwara Eliya.

Sri Lanka will also press for implementing a long-term cooperation to develop sports in the country with China State General Administration of Sports.

It must be noted that China was the country that received highest number of medals at the recently concluded 2012 London Olympics although the number of Gold Medals it received was only second to the United States.

This is the third high profile visit made by a Chinese official to Sri Lanka in the space of five weeks (niz).
