Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 10 wickets in the 1st Test

Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by 10 wickets in the first test of the two test series played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand by winning the toss elected to bat and scored 221 runs in their first innings.  B.McCullum made the highest score of 68 runs in this innings and the next highest scorer was Flynn who scored 53 runs.  Rangana Herath took 5 wickets for 65 runs and the other wickets were taken by Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara with 3 and 2 wickets respectively

In return Sri Lanka scored 247 runs in the first innings with Jayawardene making the highest score of 91 runs, followed by Angelo Mathews with 79 runs.

In the New Zealand 2nd innings again Rangana Herath restricted them by taking 6 wickets for 43 runs paving the way to dismiss all the New Zealand batsmen for a very low score of 118 runs, thus making Sri Lanka need only 93 runs to win the match.  The target score of 93 runs were scored by Sri Lankan opening pair Paranavithana and Karunaratne in 18.3 overs without conceding any wicket.

Accordingly, Sri Lanka won the test by 10 wickets.  Rangana Herath who took 11 wickets in both innings has been adjudged as the Man of the Match.  (niz)
