Sri Lanka’s first quarter exports registered a positive growth of 16%, while monthly exports for March jumped by as much as 27%! “Good news! It is noteworthy that the women have taken the lead to initiate a savings project in this regard. The Minister expressed these views participating as the Chief Guest at several fisheries projects n Beruwala recently.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has revealed that 21% of children in Sri Lanka are malnourished. This can be eliminated by the consumption of fish. We have launched a programe where our consumption of protein can be increased to 72%, while also bringing down the price of fish.
This is the first time that a national program is being put into action under safety of fishermen and fishing vessels at a national level. It is therefore very important that every fishermen is made aware of this program. We are planning an awareness program on this subject through the national fisheries conference for their protection, first aid and assistance of fishermen. The fisheries sector while supporting the livelihoods of a considerable number of fishermen and their families is also a foreign exchange earning enterprise.
The 9th Round of the bilateral political consultations between Sri Lanka and China was convened at the Ministry of External Affairs on 24th April 2014, co-chaired by Liu Zhenmin, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and Mrs. Kshenuka Senewiratne, Secretary, External Affairs. The multi-dimensional and deep-rooted bilateral partnership between the two countries was extensively reviewed during the consultations with special focus on extending the scope for cooperation for mutual benefit.
