    The Department of Meteorology today issued Warning for Severe Lightning and Heavy Rain says that Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Anuradhapura, Vauniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu andKilinochchi districts in the evening or night.
    Heavy falls above 100mm can be expected at someplaces in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uvaand Eastern provinces and in Anuradhapura,Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts. .
    Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80 kmphare also possible during thundershowers. , it said.

    The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
     Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
     Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea
    plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
     Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
     Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
     Beware of fallen trees and power lines.
     For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.

     

    Sri Lanka’s tourism sector earnings were estimated at US $2,380 million during the first eight months of 2019 compared to US $2,971 million during the corresponding period of 2018, latest External Sector Performance report of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka outlines.

    The Government of Sri Lanka has signed two agreements with the Government of Netherlands for Rs. 14 billion financial assistance for the construction of 200 rural brides and the establishment of a vocational training institute in Polonnaruwa.Two agreements were signed, on Thursday 10th October 2019, between the Government of Sri Lanka and Rabobank of the Netherlands amounting to EUR 70.7 million (Approximately Rs. 14.1 billion) for construction of rural bridges and Establishment of National Vocational Training Institute at Hingurakgoda, Polonnaruwa.

    The internationally acclaimed “CarbonNeutral Operations” certificate which was granted to Sri Lanka Navy General Hospital(Colombo) through an assessment conducted by Carbon Consulting Company (Pvt) Ltd., was awarded to the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva at a ceremony held in Navy Headquarters, Colombo, today ( 15th October 2019).
