    Sri Lanka Army will launch a mega project to reforest Wilpattu Forest Reserve to mark the 10th anniversary of the war victory against the Tamil Tiger terrorists group.The mega reforestation project, organized jointly by the Sri Lanka Army and the 'Manusath Derana' TV channel on account of the completion of a decade after Humanitarian Operations against LTTE terrorism will get underway on the Victory Day (May 18) at Marichchakaddi in Wilpattu under the Army's 'Thuruliya Wenuwen Api' project.

    Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake said yesterday the soldier who was seen in a CCTV video as having made a hand gesture to a mob during a violent incident that occurred in Nattanidiya in Thummodara last Monday, and was found to be not at fault.

    The Department of Prisons has permitted relatives of prisoners to visit the inmates tomorrow and Sunday.The permission has been granted due to the Vesak Media Spokesperson for the Department noted that the inmates charged with serious offenses will be granted the opportunity to meet their relatives under special security. In the two days visitors of the prisoners are allowed to bring food and things for the inmates.

    President Maithripala Sirisena will pardon 728 prison inmates in view of the Vesak Poya day this year. The main ceremony to release those prisoners will be held at the Welikada Prison premises under the patronage of the President on Saturday.

    Responding to allegations which surfaced based on a video that was circulated on social media depicting an army personnel willingly assisting violent mobs, the army in a special statement has sought assistance from the general public to identify the individual to take disciplinary action.CCTV footage released from a mosque in Thunmodara shows an armed army personnel beckoning mobs to approach the mosque. He is seen gesturing asking them to proceed and is swiftly seen leaving the scene.

    May 20th declared a public holiday

    The government has declared the 20th of May (Monday) as a public holiday, Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government Wajira Abeywardana said today. The Minister further said this decision was taken in view of the Vesak holidays falling on this weekend.

    Gazette banning UAVs, drones

    President Maithripala Sirisena as the Defence Minister issued a Gazette Extraordinary to prohibit the navigation of any unmanned aircraft (UAV) or any drone over Sri Lanka on Monday. According to the Gazette, no person other than a member of Tri-Forces or a police officer is allowed to navigate drones or unmanned aircraft over Sri Lanka until further notice. The Gazette has been issued under the provisions of Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in a press statement following the Easter Sunday attacks, announced that all drones and unmanned aircraft are banned within Sri Lankan airspace from April 25.
