Construction work on the 50 MW wind power plant in Mannar is being expedited, with the main project components, including wind turbines, now arriving in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Energy announced.
According to the Ministry, the first shipment of wind turbines required for the project arrived a few weeks ago, while the remaining equipment has now reached the Port of Trincomalee. Unloading operations are currently underway.
The project is expected to play a significant role in expanding Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity and increasing the share of renewable energy in the national power grid. It is also expected to contribute towards the country’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Ministry noted that electricity generated by the plant will be purchased at a rate of US$ 0.0465 (approximately Rs. 14.37) per unit, the lowest recorded tariff for wind-generated electricity in Sri Lanka.
Once connected to the national grid, the wind power plant is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and generate annual foreign exchange savings of approximately Rs. 4.7 billion.
The project was awarded through a competitive international tender process, with Hayleys Fentons PLC responsible for the installation and maintenance of the wind turbines. The National System Operator will oversee the plant’s system control and management.
