Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has lodged complaints with relevant law enforcement authorities over a suspected financial fraud involving unauthorized access to the computer system of its External Resources Department.
The Ministry stated that the incident was detected following unusual information linked to a foreign currency transaction in January 2026. Based on these findings, the matter was initially reported to the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police.
Subsequently, complaints were also filed with the Criminal Investigation Department, while the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka was also notified.
According to the Ministry, a preliminary internal inquiry has been conducted, and disciplinary action has been taken against several officials based on its findings.
The Ministry further stated that it is extending full cooperation to the ongoing investigations by providing all necessary information to the relevant authorities. However, additional details will be released at a later stage to avoid any interference with the investigations.
It was also noted that future actions will be taken in coordination with relevant parties, in line with existing agreements and understandings between Sri Lanka and foreign governments.
