The Department of Irrigation announced that the spill gates of the Kotmale Reservoir were opened at around 8.00 a.m. today (05), releasing approximately 130 cubic feet of water per second into the Mahaweli River.
The Irrigation Engineer in charge of the Kotmale Reservoir said the decision was taken to regulate the reservoir's water level.
Accordingly, the Department of Irrigation has urged residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River in Ulapane, Geli Oya, Gampola, Peradeniya and Katugastota, as well as those engaged in activities in and around the river, to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
