A boat carrying 10 passengers from Kurikattuwan Jetty in Jaffna to Delft Island was involved in an accident near Nainativu (Nagadeepa) yesterday afternoon (16), with all passengers safely rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy.
The passengers, comprising two women and eight men, were rescued in a swift operation launched by the Navy with the assistance of residents in Nainativu and Delft.
Following the incident, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar instructed the Sri Lanka Navy to immediately commence rescue operations.
All 10 passengers were subsequently admitted to the Nainativu Hospital for further medical treatment.
The Minister has also instructed officials to submit a detailed report on the cause of the accident and to investigate whether adequate life jackets had been provided and whether proper safety procedures had been followed.
He further emphasized that strict maritime safety procedures must be followed to ensure the safety of passengers and instructed officials to take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
