China’s newly appointed Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Wei Huaxiang, met with Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage yesterday (28) at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
During the meeting, discussions focused on further strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China.
Special attention was given to expanding bilateral cooperation in youth development, youth exchange programmes and sports, with a view to creating new opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.
Ambassador Wei Huaxiang also stated that China could provide two additional dragon boats to Sri Lanka next year.
The importance of continuing cooperation to develop the skills of Sri Lanka’s younger generation, provide them with international experiences and strengthen ties between the youth of the two countries was also emphasised during the meeting.
Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Aruna Bandara, and officials of the Chinese Embassy were also present.
Ambassador Wei Huaxiang assumed duties as China’s new Ambassador to Sri Lanka in August 2026.
