A new five-storey Port Health Office at the Port of Colombo was officially opened on July 28 to strengthen border health services, enhance disease surveillance and improve emergency public health response in line with International Health Regulations.
The facility was inaugurated by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, together with Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunatilaka and Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata.
Built at a cost of over Rs. 168 million, the project was implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with financial support from the Government of Japan. The new office will enhance port health inspections, quarantine services, ship sanitation certification, vector control programmes and public health emergency response, while strengthening Sri Lanka's border health security and supporting safe maritime trade.
