A special low-floor priority bus service for persons with disabilities will be launched as a pilot project from tomorrow (21) at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
The project, introduced in line with the government’s vision of ensuring equal opportunities and safeguarding human dignity for all, has been allocated Rs. 430.7 million. It is also a key initiative implemented under the Clean Sri Lanka Programme.
Under the first phase, 10 modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses—designed for easy access by wheelchair users—will be deployed. Each bus can accommodate up to 80 passengers and includes 33 seats, along with special safety features tailored for wheelchair users.
The buses are scheduled to operate every 40 minutes during morning and evening hours on routes from Makumbura to Pettah and from Makumbura to Kadawatha.
The service will also cover key healthcare institutions, including the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama and the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, aiming to improve accessibility for patients and commuters alike.
