Seven additional Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) under the government's initiative to strengthen the national power grid and provide relief to electricity consumers arrived at the Port of Colombo yesterday (25), the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation announced.
The seven systems are scheduled to be installed near electricity transmission substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavunathivu, Valaichchenai and Mahiyanganaya. Once operational, they will have a combined storage capacity of 280 MW and are expected to supply 70 MW of electricity daily to the national grid.
The installations are being carried out by Windforce PLC, which was selected through an international competitive bidding process. The company is also in the process of installing energy storage systems at six additional locations.
Meanwhile, eight storage systems brought to the country earlier this month are currently being installed near selected substations. These are expected to be completed by the end of July and will contribute an additional 80 MW of power to the national grid.
The operation and management of the storage systems will be handled by National System Operator Ltd (NSO), a company under the Ministry of Energy, while maintenance responsibilities will remain with the respective contractors.
The government says the Battery Energy Storage Systems project is aimed at enhancing grid stability, supporting reliable energy supply, reducing environmental impacts and strengthening the country's economy through a more resilient power sector.
