Sri Lanka to Introduce Smart Ticketing System for Railway Passengers

As part of efforts to modernize Sri Lanka’s railway service, a new ticketing system along with advanced ticket inspection equipment will be introduced across railway stations islandwide, Deputy Minister of Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena said.

The initiative aims to provide a more convenient and efficient service for passengers, with several additional features included to enhance user experience. The Deputy Minister emphasized that steps should be taken to complete the project before the end of this year.

Implemented under the CSRP project, the programme will replace traditional paper tickets with a new digital system. By further expanding the existing online ticketing method, the new system is expected to improve transparency and operational efficiency within the railway service.

The pilot project is scheduled to commence in April, focusing on the Kelani Valley railway line. It will initially be implemented at the Narahenpita, Nugegoda, Makumbura, Homagama, and Padukka railway stations.

Following the identification of practical issues through the pilot phase, there are plans to expand the “smart” ticketing system to all stations along the Kelani Valley line within a short period, and subsequently to other railway lines across the country.
