    Army Seva Vanitha Unit awards scholarships to war hero children

    Giving moral encouragement and practical economic support to War Hero families, Mrs Wasantha Gunewardena, President, Ministry of Defence (MoD) Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) showed her maternal care giving away scholarships to 250 more students of War Hero families, worth some Rs 2 million to coincide with the International Children's Day and the 66th Army Anniversary during a ceremony at Colombo 2, Defence Service College auditorium Saturday (3) morning.



    The ceremony, headed by Mrs Wasantha Gunewardena as the Chief Guest offered gift parcels each worth Rs 8000/= to the children of War Heroes. The gift parcel contained school bags, Rs 1500/= worth gift vouchers, book parcels and other stationeries, etc. Mrs Nayana de Silva, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival.   



    This phase of the project too has been organized under the close supervision of the Commander of the Army who is of the view that  welfare assistance of this nature would certainly help increase his productivity and efficiency as  part of his pestering 'economic' burdens are eased and resolved to a greater extent.


    Several sponsors contributed to make this task a great success. Mr Sudath Tennakoon, the owner of the Central Bearings Pvt Ltd provided 10 gift parcels each worth of Rs 8000/= , the Armu Media reported.



    At the same time, Mrs Nayana De Siva handed over a cheque worth of Rs 130,000/= to the President of the Ananda College Prefect Board to purchase necessary instruments for Maths and Science sections of the Mugunawatawana Senanayaka College, Madampe, a school that lacks such facilities.


    Ananda College Prefect Board is conducting a project to develop rural schools of the country. They have estimated that a sum of Rs 500,000/= is needed for development of the school.



    Moreover, Mrs Sharanki Dias, ASVU Vice-President handed over a stock of English books to Mrs Prajeewa Alwis, Senior ASVU member in charge of pre-school project for use of kids at Viru Kekulu pre-schools.



    Distribution of those scholarships is a joint venture of the Chief Guest, ASVU President and several other ASVU executive members.



    Intermittent entertaining features of the 'Ranwala Balakaya' folk songs and colourful stage presentations, coupled with performances of the Captain Isuru Jayarathna and performance of kids of the Viru Kekulu pre-schools, added glamour and colour to the day's event.



    A gathering of parents, senior ASVU members and Army officers were present there to witness the day's ceremony.
