    Oluvil Harbour to be upgraded Featured

    The government has taken action to upgrade the Oluvil port. The programme is a joint project of the Port and Naval Ministry and the Ministry of Fisheries. Ministers of the respective ministries Arjuna Ranatunga and Mahinda Amaraweera held a discussion in this regard recently.

    Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said that compensation yments for the people who are displaced due to the construction of the Oluvil port has not been completed yet. The minister pointed out that a large sum of money has to be paid for the compensation. The officials who represented the Ministries said that a permanent solution should be placed to minimize sea erosion and deposit of sand .The two Mministers agreed to appoint a joint committee to study the situation. The committee is expected to submit the preliminary report in two weeks.

     

    Minister Mahinda Amarawqeera said that the large scale fishing vessels can only be entered by Dickowita port. He pointed out that after removing the ban on exporting fish products to Europe more big vessels will come to the country. the minister said that hence it is compulsory to expand the Oluvil port.
