Katuandara Plant Invades Yala Wildlife Park

    October 29, 2015

The invasive plant “Katuandara” which destroyed many valuable trees at Bundala National Wildlife Park has now become a threat to Yala National Wildlife Park.

Scientifically identified as “Prosopis juliflora”, this plant is considered to be a strong invasive plant. It has been placed among the top 100 invasive plants in the world. Environmentalists say that this plant completely absorbs the nutrition from the earth. The oily nature of its leaves prevents the growth of other plants.

Wildlife Officials of Yala National wildlife Park say that this plant is spreading in the park. They said that if it is not removed, the Wildlife Park and the environment will be severely affected.
