    Prisons to be given mobile phone jamming devices

    Prisons are to be given jammers that block mobile phone signals in order to stop inmates committing more crimes while behind bars, Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D. M. Swaminathan said in parliament yesterday (17).

    Mobile phones are one of the most smuggled items into prisons. The Minister said that mobile phones smuggled into jails are being used by offenders to carry out various activities such as to harass victims and to carry out underworld operations.

     

    The Minister said mobile phone jamming devices have already been fixed at the Welikada Prison and the outcome is a success

     

    Therefoe, the government has decided to instal jammers in all prisons throughout the country from next year, he added.

     

    The Minister was responding to a question raised by UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana.
