    HIV screening for pregnant mothers

    January 08, 2016

Arrangement will be made to test all pregnant mothers for HIV, from this year. Although there are about 20 HIV positive mothers in Sri Lanka, no child has yet contracted the disease from it's mother, sources at the Health Ministry said.

The Health Ministry provides required drugs to positive mothers, to prevent HIV transmission to the infant. Infants are birthed using Caesarian sections to further prevent the transmitting of the disease, the sources added.

However, only half of all mothers pregnant last year were tested fro HIV. This year, the Ministry plans to test all pregnant mothers to prevent the disease from spreading to children.
