    January 11, 2016

More students who passed the Grade Five Scholarship Examination would be able to enter popular schools as the cut-off mark for entering popular schools may be reduced by one mark. A reduction in the cut-off mark will provide an opportunity for more students to enter popular schools, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

As an outcome of recent inquiry conducted by the Education Ministry, it was revealed that the cut-off mark was high as a result of several malpractices taking place at several popular schools.

After considering many requests of parents in this regard, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam ordered Ministry officials to look into the matter.

As a result of this investigation, it has been revealed that more opportunities would be available at certain popular schools. It has also been revealed that many malpractices had taken place at certain popular schools when enrolling scholarships to Grade 6. Accordingly, there are 14 parallel classes for Grade 6. Of these, four classes have been allocated for Grade Five Scholarship students.

The Education Ministry nominates 180 students for these four classes. However, the inquiry revealed that there are 15 parallel classes from Grade 7 upwards. The minister has advised that a special Grade 6 class be introduced. Accordingly, 40 more students can be enrolled to Grade 6 from this year, bringing the total number of student enrollments to 220. Besides, it has been revealed that certain schools had introduced more classes due to political influence.
