    Bus priority lane disciplines drivers

    August 22, 2017

The second day of the bus priority lane program was implemented from Katubedda Junction to Maliban Junction and from Bambalapitiya Junction to Pittala Junction today (22nd Aug.).

The program implemented by Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development commenced on 15th August from Moratuwa, Kurusa Junction up to Katubedda and from Savoy Cinema to Bambalapitiya Junction.

According to the Minster Patali Champika Ranawaka, the drivers have become disciplined due to the bus priority lane and driving has become easy for private vehicle owners as there is road discipline.

He said, to construct a highway it costs heavily but it doesn’t solve the traffic problem where as implementing the bus priority lane has reduced the congestion. Therefore, the country should consider strengthening the public transport system rather than building highways, he said.

Earlier in road development the roads were widened to provide space for private vehicles and caused many issues. In the future, in road development, priority will be given for public transport.

The ministry has proposed an express bus service to the government. It will use the middle lane. Since it will need a structural change as well as a huge amount of money, he said that they would work with the Road Development Authority to make it a reality.
