Sri Lanka seek assistance from Myanmar and B'Desh to rescue stranded fishermen

    October 08, 2014

The government has sought permission from Myanmar and Bangladesh governments yesterday for about 180 fishermen aboard 36 vessels stranded in the deep sea to enter those countries to seek shelter from the impending stormy weather brought about by the depression in Bay of Bengal.

Reportedly the vessels have been directed to Myanmar, the closet location, but there were reports that Myanmar authorities have taken three vessels and the fishermen in them into custody.

However, Sri Lanka Navy's Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) based in Colombo, has alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centers in Myanmar and Bangladesh about the stranded Sri Lankan fishing boats near coasts of Myanmar and Bangladesh and requested to render possible assistance.
