    November 07, 2014

The community water supply project "A Handful of Water for Healthy living" will be launched today (07) at 1.00pm at the North Western Provincial Council Auditorium.  The Project is a concept of North Western Province Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera on the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Seventy seven water refinery systems at a cost of 311 million rupees will be installed under this project in the North Western Province where a large number of people are affected by chronic kidney disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease has been prevalent in the North Central and North Western provinces of Sri Lanka over the past decade. The number of cases has been steadily rising since the inception of the disease. In certain areas 5 to 10 % of the population of all age groups including children is affected. Chronic Kidney Disease has grown to epidemic level in Kurunegala & Anuradhapura districts.

Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said that Chronic Kidney Disease has become a major health problem in rural Sri Lanka.  He said   drinking safe water could control the disease and as such  installing water purification systems would control spreading of the disease. (KH)
