Wild Locality for Roaming Wild Elephants in Kumaragalakanda

    November 10, 2014

Wildlife Conservation Department have made arrangements to set up a wild locality (wana piyasa) in Kumaragalakanda area for roaming wild elephants in Laggala. The Economic Development Ministry has allocated Rs. 12 million for this.

Due to the construction of Moragahakanda Mahaweli reservoir, five elephant crossings have been completely closed. Wild elephants from Wasgamuwa National Park have enclosed in shrubberies near villages and cause damage to properties.

These elephants will now be driven into the Vana Piyasa. Under this program, wild elephants encroaching villages can be avoided.
