The Government has taken steps to Implement the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation Free Trade Area (BIMSTEC FTA). BIMSTEC comprises of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan.
The main objective of this regional grouping is to foster socio-economic progress of the member countries by promoting co-operation in eight priority sectors, namely, Trade and Investment, Technology, Transportation and Communication, Tourism, Fisheries, Energy, Agriculture and Human Resources Development. It provides a unique link between South Asia and Southeast Asia.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
News.lk publishes in three languages – Sinhala, Tamil and English.
