    Hambantota 'Tower Hill' to be re-developed

    The Urban Development Auditory has taken steps to re-develop the Tower Hill Area' in Hambantota. ''Tower Hill Area' is an important site In Hambantota in view of inherent cultural, architectural and archeological characters.

    The existing buildings have been built during Portuguese, Dutch and British periods. Martello Tower, former Government Agent's office, Government Agents Bungalow. Light House. Old Courts Complex, Judge's Bungalow, Rest House are among them.

     

    According to the Zoning Plan of the Greater Hambantota Master Plan prepared by the UDA the 'Tower Hill Area' falls within the Coastal Tourism Zone. The Master Plan recommends conserving the existing buildings situated within the Coastal Tourism Zone. which are having rich archeological & architectural values as an important aspect tor promotion of tourism.

     

    The redevelopment of 'Tower Hill Area' within the Coastal Tourism Zone will comprise mainly tourism related activities such as Museums, Exhibition halls, Information Centres. Souvenir Shops, Rest Houses, Guest Houses, Small scale hotels. Cafes. Boutiques etc ...

     

    The identified archeological monuments such as the Martello Tower. Light house, bungalows etc., are to be rehabilitated and preserved. The overall land area occupied by the 'Tower Hill Area' is around 16 acres and there is a significant variation in the elevation of the land at different points. The ownership of all the lands in the "Tower Hill Area" is with the state as at present.
