    Floods inundate Polonnaruwa

    More than one million people have been affected by landslides, floods and other related disaster situations due to the inclement weather that has been prevailing in the country for more than 10 days.

    A number of areas in the Polonnaruwa district continue to be inundated. 27,260 people belonging to 7,212 families in 124 Grama Niladari Divisions in the Polonnaruwa District have been affected up to 3pm on Sunday said Polonnaruwa District Disaster Management Asst.Director G.K.U.S.K.Nanayakkara.

     

    The worst affected divisional secretariat areas are Thamankaduwa, Dimbulagala, Welikanda, Lankapura, Medirigiriya, Hingurakgoda and Elahera.

     

    Around 94 houses have been completely damaged while 701 houses have been partially damaged. Up to 3pm on Sunday 19,519 persons belonging to 4,035 families have been evacuated to temporary camps.

     

    The Polonnaruwa District Secretary Nimal ABeysiri said that action has been taken to provide relief measures to all those who have been affected.(KH)
