A record income of 2000 million rupees through the export of ornamental fish Featured

    December 30, 2014

As the Minister in charge the President has instructed me to develop the Ornamental Fish industry in Sri Lanka, on which directive I have taken steps to action a massive programme through the National Aquatic Resources Agency (NARA).  It is expected that Sri Lanka can earn an income of 2000 million rupees by 2015 through the export of ornamental fish.

This was revealed by the Deputy Minister of Fisheries Sarath Kumara Gunarathne at a special meeting convened for this purpose at the ministry recently.

He further added “The President has now taken over the Ministry of Fisheries.  He has given instructions that the problems faced by the Fishermen throughout the island should be taken into account and that any shortcomings or problems be attended urgently.  Any problems  in the fisheries harbours, births and anchorages should be looked into.

We have met fishermen from every province, discussed their problems and have taken steps to solve them.   We have discussed the problems in a friendly environment and taken steps to solve their problems with their participation, as has been instructed by the President.  We have already made good progress and in the past too based on the Mahinda Chinthana.  No leader has given such an important place to the fishermen as has been done by the President”.

Dr.(Mrs.) Damitha de Zoysa,  Actg.Secretary to the Ministry, the Chairman of the National Aquatic Development Authority Jayantha Chandrasoma together with the heads of organizations were present.
