Yaal Devi commences its journey up to Kankesanthurai Featured

    January 03, 2015

After a lapse of 25 years, the reconstructed Northern railway line from Jaffna to Kankesanthurai (KKS) was commissioned yesterday (Jan.02) by inaugurating the north bound Yal Devi train service up to Kankesanthurai and from yesterday the Yaal Devi began its journey up to Kankesanthurai marking another milestone in the North South relations.

In the past Yaal Devi was not restricted only to a train journey. It was also an indelible mark in the North South brotherhood. However this relationship was breached with the operation of the train service coming to a complete halt with a brutal attack mooted by the LTTE terrorists.

Along with the pulverizing of terrorism the Government embarked on a massive development operation to rebuild the Northern rail track. Indian assistance was received to rebuild this train track and the Government succeeded in successfully completing the work. With the operation of Yaal Devi to Omanthai and Jaffna, it commenced running up to Kankesanthurai from today. As such the Northern polity is now in a position to travel to Kankesanthurai by train.

The launch of the train to Kankesanthurai took place Friday (02) under the patronage of Minister Kumara Welgama.

Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Reginald Cooray and Douglas Devananda joined him on the occasion.

The expenditure incurred in building of this 18 Km. long rail track from Jaffna to Kankesanthurai was 40 million rupees. The main stations are Jaffn, Chunnakam and Kankesanthurai. There are also six sub stations. They are located at Kokuvil, Kondavil, Inuvil, Mallakam, Thelippalai and Mavadipuram.
