May 05, 2014

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has revealed that 21% of children in Sri Lanka are malnourished.  This can be eliminated by the consumption of fish. We have launched a programe where our consumption of protein can be increased to 72%, while also bringing down the price of fish.

This was revealed by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister while on a tour of the Devahuwa and Kandalama reservoirs  in the Matale district.

"We have increased the number of fish stalls from 51 to 135 in a bid to bring  down the price of fish and thereby to encourage people to increase the fish consumption" said Minister Senarathna.  He further said that the daily fish intake of a person which is 30 gms have now being increased to 41.5 gms.

"We hope to bring this up to 80 gms through which malnutrition can be corrected" the Minister added.
